Taking Game-An Introduction

My name is Andrew Anderson, I do a lot of things. I am a lifelong musician and songwriter (see andrewanderson.bandcamp.com), a rookie first responder and wildland firefighter, a wannabe helicopter pilot inching ever so slowly toward a private rating, a former corrections officer, a father of two, a husband, and a halfway decent cook. I have a habit of commenting on politics, though the better part of me thinks I ought to refrain from such activities. I have traveled all over this country more than a few times. All of those experiences, I suppose will probably come through in this blog. However, the chief reason I am writing here and starting a new site is because I want to write about hunting.

As a kid, I would read about epic hunting adventures in magazines like Petersen's or Field and Stream and I always thought that writing for said magazines must be one of the best jobs in the world. Go to a new place, hunt a bear, write about it and send the story to a magazine editor... Today, I read magazines, and gear reviews etc and I can't help but think, "well shit, I give my opinion on these things all the time, and I tell these stories all the time" why not write about it?

I am not an expert by any means. I have only shot a few deer. I have shot several turkeys, countless waterfowl, and I have a pretty well trained pointing lab named Tanker, whose talent outweighs my ability as a handler. I shoot pretty well, but not as well as my brother. I do not want to give the impression that I consider myself an expert in any way. However, the experiences are extremely important to me. Calling in a tom for the first time with my voice, doing so again the next morning for my uncle. Shooting my first buck with the rifle my grandfather would give me. Shooting my first limit of ducks on Christmas Eve a week after my grandfather passed away. Taking my kids on their first hunting and camping trips. Taking my best friend on his first hunting trips. Passing on the skills I have learned, if not mastered, and passing on a desire to master those skills that I have only merely learned.

This is not to say that I won't talk about gear, or guns, or politics or give my thoughts on current events from time to time as it seems fitting. But the purpose of this site is hunting, a sport that I consider to be a year round effort, even in the off season. Hunting season is just around the corner and I have a backlog of stories to write down. Stay tuned. Good luck. Be safe.
